Furniture Fair began as Boomtown Grocery
and was in Holly Ridge, NC. Five Popkin brothers, Jerry, Sidney, Alfred, Marty,
and Itchy founded the business in 1943 during WWII. From the beginning the
brothers were determined to provide the community with affordable merchandise
that was needed and wanted. It was important that products they offered were
backed with sales and service that were reliable and friendly, as well as Credit,
fast and competent customer service, and access to reliable name brand were the
key to future success.

 Boomtown came to Jacksonville in
1950 opening a furniture and appliance store on New Bridge Street. Sidney and
Jerry ran the new location while Alfred managed the store in Holly Ridge. Marty
and Itchy were working at the stores after school and on the weekends. The
Popkin family along with the business became an important part of the rapidly
growing community in Jacksonville.

A warehouse was necessary due to the
growing volume of sales. This warehouse later evolved into the First Furniture
Fair. Furniture Fair opened their doors on Lejeune Blvd in 1953 under the
management of Sidney and Marty. Itchy took over as manager in 1954. After the
setback of two fires and destruction in the 1973 blizzard, the flagship store
on Bellfork Road opened in 1974.
